Empowering people with disabilities through public companies and AI [Guest Lecture of SHI]

Hello. I’m Yasumasa Tanaka from Papageno.
On Saturday, November 8, 2025, I had the opportunity to give a guest lecture for the “Mibyō (Pre-disease) Special Studies” course at my alma mater, the Graduate School of Health Innovation at Kanagawa University of Human Services. This year’s first-year master’s cohort was incredibly diverse, with students from Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and South Africa. The lecture is now available on YouTube.
Since my English is not very good, I’m sharing both the talk script and slide materials together here on note.

Creating Social Impact Through Heath Innovation

画像

Hello everyone. My name is Yasumasa Tanaka. I’m the CEO of Papageno.
Today, I’ll share my story about creating social impact through health innovation.

Let me introduce myself.

画像

Let me introduce myself. I’m 30 years old. I graduated from Keio SFC in 2018, and from SHI in 2023. My major was Media and Suicide Prevention.
Before founding Papageno, I worked at healthcare startups like iCARE and ExaWizards.
I founded Papageno in March 2022, while I was still in SHI. In December 2024, we had an M&A with a listed company for 130 million yen. I joined their management as a shareholder.
In March 2025, I published a book about disability support through generative AI.
Currently, I’m also active as an angel investor.

I became a parent in August.

I became a parent in August. It gives me more motivation to create a better society for next generation.

About my background

画像

About my background. I worked at healthcare startups for four years.
I worked on SaaS for occupational health at iCARE, and SaaS for care facilities at ExaWizards.
I worked at 3 companies in 4 years before founding Papageno.

My grades at SHI

画像

By the way, My grades at SHI were not very good. But that’s okay for me. Grades are not everything.
What matters is what you do with what you learn.

“Why did I join SHI?

画像

I found out about SHI when Professor Tsuno spoke at a symposium. I
thought SHI was an opportunity to challenge myself.
I wanted to become a leader who can go beyond the boundaries of government, industry, and academia.
I wanted to lead efforts to solve the social issue of mental health. That’s why I applied to SHI.

The begining of Papageno

画像

The story of Papageno began with a project.
We created a picture book together with Kakerun-san. He is a person living with schizophrenia(統合失調症) who attends a disability welfare facility.
In Japan, there are about 15,000 Type-B Continuous Employment Support facilities. But only around 7.5% of them provide IT-related work opportunities.
People with disabilities demand better opportunities & environment.

AI is a valuable social resource for people with disabilities

画像

I have one hypothesis. Just as people with poor vision use glasses, using AI to support cognitive disabilities will become the norm. AI can be like glasses for the brain.
We tried many things based on this hypothesis.

Our Business

画像

Papageno has two main businesses.
First is our core business: Papageno Work & Recovery. This is a pioneering AI-driven Type-B employment support facility in Tokyo.
Second is our impact expansion business: AI Shien-san. This is driving positive change across the welfare industry.
Both businesses empower individuals through generative AI.

Our Business Model

画像

Let me explain our business model.
Companies outsource their DX work to us. We break down the tasks into smaller pieces. Then, people with disabilities execute these tasks. Finally, we deliver the results back to the companies.
This way, people with disabilities can contribute to corporate DX.

AI Empowering People with Disabilities

画像

Let me share some stories.
First example: A person with social anxiety couldn’t report to staff about their work. But with an AI work consultant that has the work manual, they can now solve problems independently through chat.
Second example: A person with communication struggles practiced with an AI partner. Now they can communicate more empathetically.
AI is truly empowering people with disabilities.

Scaling health innovation as a shareholder

画像

We built three employment support facilities. We developed AI Shien-san, a DX SaaS for welfare. In December 2024, we had an M&A exit to AHC Group for 130 million yen. The government recognized our welfare DX innovation.
Now, I’m leading industry transformation as a shareholder of a listed company. We are scaling health innovation.

Activist Social Worker

画像

I see myself as an ‘Activist typed Social Worker.’
This has two parts.
First part: Direct Support Practitioner. I help people in front of me. I share practice-based knowledge.
Second part: Activist. I influence public companies and government. I drive systemic change as a shareholder.
By combining these two roles, I can create real change.

Co-founding startups with people with disabilities

画像

I’m co-founding new startups with people with disabilities. The company name is ‘Care no Baton.’ We founded it in September 2025. We have three co-founders.

Our mission has three parts:

  • Business succession support for the care sector
  • Management talent development for the care sector
  • Creating high-income jobs for people with disabilities – over 10 million yen per year

This is a big challenge. But we believe people with disabilities can earn high salaries if given the right opportunities and environment.

Angel investor

画像

I’m also an angel investor in three startups.
First: Bunchou Kikaku. Founded in April 2025. They operate group homes for people with mental disabilities.
Second: Colloquium. Founded in April 2025. They develop electrolarynx devices.
All three companies are creating social impact in healthcare.

DX Advisor for psychiatric hospitals and universities

画像

I am also DX advisor for psychiatric hospitals and universities.
I help them use technology to improve their services.

Message

画像

Let me finish with this message. To create health innovation, ask not what SHI can give you, but what you can give to SHI. Don’t just take from SHI. Think about what you can contribute. That’s how we create real innovation.
